Carina Turner – A ProfileBorn at Potsdam, Germany in 1944 and migrated to Australia with her mother and father in 1952 where they settled at Quorn in the beautiful Flinders Ranges. In her early days of drawing Carina’s main influence was Albrecht Duerer (Her fathers bookcase held four huge volumes). She started painting and some years later, during the seventies a new found freedom of expression and colour was discovered when influenced by Gauguin, Modigliani and Matisse. Up until then Carina had been painting only in oils and watercolours. Carina had married and raised 4 children. She began to experiment with the perfidious medium of batik during her quest for a different style in 1977 while living in Victoria. It was a wax resist method, using dyes and fabric as a canvas. Her technique and newly found exciting style enabled her to express herself with a new approach to the ancient art form of batik.
By 1980 Carina had moved to Northern NSW and held her first exhibition at Ulmarra Galleries in 1980. She followed this with further successful exhibitions again in 1981 and 1982 at Ulmarra Galleries. In the following years from 1984 to 1988 exhibitions were held at Mermaid Beach - Gold Coast, David McKay Harrison Gallery – Ballina, Lake Russell Gallery – Coffs Harbour, Holdsworth Gallery – Sydney, Allegro Gallery – Sydney, and Grafton Regional Gallery – Grafton. Carina
then decided to move back to her old home town of Quorn and set up her own
business as Carina Turner Studio Gallery. Since then she has held
exhibitions at the Barry Newton Gallery in Adelaide from 1990 to 1996 and
one in Quorn during 1992. Of later years she has relied on sales through
her own gallery in Quorn and has sold some of her work internationally. |
